  • The Core Truth of the Enneagram is that we are much more than our personality. Our basic type reveals the psychological mechanisms by which we forget our true nature—our Divine Essence—the way in which we abandon ourselves

  • Each basic fear is a reaction to the universal fear of death and annihilation — the fear of nothingness.

  • In response to a basic fear, a basic desire emerges, often sought to be fulfilled in misguided ways.

  • The process of growth entails an ongoing cycling among letting go of old blockages, opening up to new possibilities in ourselves, and then encountering deeper levels of blockage.

  • Presence always reveals what in us is blocking us from becoming more present.

    • We fully experience our Presence as a living being here and now.
    • We take in the impressions of our internal and external environments completely and without judgment or emotional reaction.
    • We are fully participating in the moment.
  • People typically require a shock to go from an average level to unhealthy behaviors. The unhealthy behaviors associated with each type is associated with a self-abandonment.

  • In the healthy range of behavior, we eventually reach the liberation point — where we no longer identify with the ego. It is the realization that we have the qualities we were looking for.

  • There are two directions in the Enneagram

    • The Direction of Integration integrates the development towards wholeness for each type. It is associated with becoming healthier.
    • The Direction of Disintegration shows what behaviors manifest when the type’s behavior is pushed to the limit. It is associated with becoming more dysfunctional.
    • Movement along either direction occurs more or less on the same level (so healthy to healthy, average to average, unhealthy to unhealthy)
    • More volatile personalities tend to move along the direction of disintegration.
    • Integration requires a more conscious choice to let go of the hindrances associated with each type.

The Types and their Wings

Ones

  • The Reformer - They have a sense of mission that leads them to want to improve the world in various ways. They are activists who are searching for an acceptable rationale for what they feel they must do.

  • 1w9 - The Idealist

    • Healthy: Highly discerning and wise. Maintains a dispassionate, philosophical stance focusing on the big picture. They are reclusive and emotionally reserved but generally considerate.
    • Average: They would rather explain their ideals than personally persuade others of their correctness. The anger manifests as stiffness, impatience and sarcasm. They work alone to avoid having to deal with others. giving off an elitist and condescending vibe.
  • 1w2 - The Advocate

    • Healthy: Blends their quest for ideals and higher principles with empathy and compassion for others. They get others involved to care
    • Average: Fairly aggressive and forceful in the pursuit of the ideals and reforms they seek. They debate others and refine their ideas. However, they can become critical and irritable and can often feel more frustrated by people and events.

Twos

  • The Helper - Either the most genuinely helpful to other people or, when they are less healthy, the most highly invested in seeing themselves as helpful. However, they tend to seek validation of their worth by obeying their superego’s demands to sacrifice themselves for others.

  • 2w1 - The Servant

    • Healthy: Strives for personal goodness and selfless service. They have a strong desire to relieve human suffering. More serious and more overt caretakers.
    • Average: Feel obligated against their selfish attitudes and feelings. They want to work in the background but also want to feel significant, a conflict between principle and emotional needs. They play the martyr.
  • 2w3 - The Host

    • Healthy: More outgoing, seeking love through personal connection. Charming and sociable. They share their inner bounty with others .
    • Average: Friendly and good-humored but focused and ambitious. Their friendship and attention are sufficient as gifts to others. Seductive and direct about what they want. Arrogant, self-important, high-handed.

Threes

  • The Achiever - They embody the best (success) in a culture. They are goal-oriented but they seek the success defined by others, which means that they ignore or forget about their own wants.

  • 3w2 - The Charmer

    • Healthy: More emotional, spontaneous and outgoing. Friendly and helpful while maintaining poise and esteem. They want to be loved but can sometimes substitute public life for their own private life.
    • Average: They want others to like and admire them. They may resort to multiple images to satisfy social relations.
  • 3w4 - The Professional

    • Healthy: They feel their self-esteem comes from their work. They want their work to be outstanding and well-regarded. More serious and task-oriented.
    • Average: They create tremendous pressures that they aspire to embody to avoid being shamed. They may display pretentiousness and arrogance mixed with self-consciousness and self-contempt

Fours

  • The Individualist - feel that they are unlike other human beings and, consequently, that no one can understand them or love them adequately. They build their identity around how unlike everyone else they are, even when they have doubts about their self-image.

  • 4w3 - The Aristocrat

    • Healthy: They combine creativity and ambition. Self improvement and personal advancement. They create with an audience in mind.
    • Average: They want recognition for themselves and their work, and they typically put more effort into everything having to do with their self-presentation and related matters. Competitive, Disdainful, and outwardly Grandiose.
  • 4w5 - The Bohemian

    • Health: Extremely creative, combining emotion and originality. Less concerned with acceptance and status, and create more for themselves than for an audience. They break the rules whenever self-expression is an issue.
    • Average: They dwell exclusively in their imaginations, attracted to the mysterious and symbolic. They may have brilliant flashes of insight, but they have trouble sustaining practical efforts in the real world.

Fives

  • The Investigator - they want to understand how the world works - both reality or fantasy. They do not accept existing doctrine. Behind this is the feeling that they do not have an ability to do things as well as others. They retreat to their mind with the belief that they will eventually figure out how to do things.

  • 5w4 - The Iconoclast

    • Healthy: Curious, and perceptive but also with a desire to express a unique personal vision. Drawn to the arts and their imagination
    • Average: They struggle with intense feelings. More independent and resistant to existing structures. They have difficulty staying grounded and practical. They can be attracted to forbidden subject matter.
  • 5w6 - The Problem Solver

    • Healthy: Drawn to technical subjects. Cooperative, disciplined and persistent and more interested in practical matters. They combine innovation with business savvy.
    • Average: Very intellectual and drawn to theories. Extremely restrained and private about their feelings, their attention is more directed at things than at people. They prefer to observe but can also be more argumentative and defensive about their views.

Sixes

  • The Loyalist - the most loyal to their friends and to their beliefs. They fight for their beliefs more fiercely than they fight for themselves. This is rooted in a desire to not be abandoned and the lack of confidence in their own judgment.

  • 6w5 - The Defender

    • Healthy: Excel at technical expertise, and attracted to well-established systems. They have great powers of concentration and are good problem-solvers
    • Average: More independent and serious. Often the loner type. They see the world as dangerous and view beliefs with skepticism. Aggressive and tend to use scapegoats.
  • 6w7 - The Buddy

    • Healthy: Engaging and funny. They avoid heavy topics and focus on their security needs. However, they are serious about their commitments. Energetic but also self-deprecating.
    • Average: Eager to be liked and accepted but also more hesitant to speak out about their problems. Visibly insecure and tends to procrastinate. They can be opinionated and vocal about their tastes. Anxious and depressed.

Sevens

  • The Enthusiast - enthusiastic about almost anything that catches their attention. They are curious, optimistic, and adventurous. However, they do not feel that they can find what they really want as a result of their curiosity, so they try everything

  • 7w6 - The Entertainer

    • Healthy: Productive and Playful. They have quick minds and seek variety. They interact easily with people.
    • Average: Excited by new ideas, but this can often lead to being scatter-brained with less follow through. They look for strong experiences. Childish and Hyperenthusiastic. They may also have an inferiority complex
  • 7w8 - The Realist

    • Healthy: Materialistic and enjoy the world as it is. They are determined to get what they want from life. Practical and Organized towards meeting their desires.
    • Average: They tend to multitask. Aggressive and driven but also tends to be more of a workaholic. Their focus is on generating activities than connection. Overly pragmatic and often blunt which can push people away. They can be jaded and callous.

Eights

  • The Challenger - They enjoy taking challenges as well as challenging others so that they may excel. Charismatic, Persuasive and with enormous willpower. They do not want to be controlled by anyone, for better or worse as it can block their ability to connect with people or to love.

  • 8w7 - The Independent

    • Healthy: Quick minded and Action-oriented. They can attract the support of others. The most independent, often entrepreneurial.
    • Average: Adventurous risk takers and sociable. Competitive and does not put up with perceived weakness, leading to being impatient, confrontational, impulsive and driven by their feelings.
  • 8w9 - The Bear

    • Healthy: Strong and confident but with a grounded, laid-back quality. Steady in their pursuit and generally warmer and they do things at their own pace.
    • Average: They have a dual nature. They almost dare others to underestimate them. Stubborn, Impassive and Quietly Menacing.

Nines

  • The Peacemaker - They are devoted to the quest for internal and external peace, for themselves and for others. They can have the strengths of the other Types, however they do not have a strong sense of their own identity.

  • 9w8 - The Referee

    • Healthy: They are agreeable and can comfort others with their endurance and strength. They are concerned with practical, immediate needs. They are sociable and good at negotiating

In an unhealthy case this evolves to extreme cycles of indulgence and self-restraint. Alternatively, the standards for being lax are raised. Relaxation must be “earned” and even then it is accompanied by feelings of inefficiency. Compulsive behavior also arises in an effort to maintain self-control.
The Crusader - they beleive they represent objective values. They bring about necessary reforms while exposing injustice.

In the extreme case, the expect others to agree with them. They take criticism personally. They also hold others to unrealistic expectations—nothing but perfection Additionally, they preach but it is as if it is only to appeal to their own superegos.
Shared Standards - they want a flawless relationship with an idealized partner. They put an emphasis on fidelity and have a fear of abandonment which they prevent through “checking in”

In the unhealthy case, this leads to extreme sexual compulsivity and repression. Alternatively, this may lead to them being more controlling (being the jealous lovers), seeing the other as flawed.
2Entitlement - They become martyrs. — they wear themselves out for the sake of others and do not tend to or acknowledge their own needs.

This evolves to taking pride in their sacrifices. In the unhealthy range, they become trapped in delusional self-importance and neglect of their own well-being. They cannot help but help, and they feel entitled to something to compensate for their martyrdom.
Everyone’s Friend - they want to be liked and approved by everyone. They seek validation through popularity and supporting people.

In the unhealthy range, this can lead to being patronizing. They may also be enablers of others to keep them in their debt. This can sometimes prevent them from relating to people in more satisfying ways. They help even when there is nothing they can do, and implicitly expect favors in return
Craving Intimacy - they are driven to get closer to others emotionally and physically. They are seductive through giving lots of attention.

This can devolve to being demanding to the other, eventually becoming extremely jealous, possessive and hovering They may also become more needy and ignore any set boundaries in the relationship.
3Workaholism - they feel they must work constantly, striving for achievement and motivated by the possibility of advancement and tangible rewards. They are efficient.

In an unhealthy level, they can become workaholics, neglecting their other needs for the sake of efficiently moving towards the goal. They are highly prone to burnout and nervous breakdowns.
Status Seeker - they need recognition and reassurance from their peers that they are valued. They want to prove they have the right credentials.

This devolves to the need to prove themselves to others, leading to narcissism and arrogance. This may lead to being dishonest or disillusioned in the pursuit of recognition.
The Catch - They desire to be desired. They want to be wanted. They want to be the type that their partner is proud to show off. They may know how to seduce (by meeting other’s expectations) but not to sustain a relationship.

This can devolve to rejecting people they care about. This can lead to promiscuity that hides their vulnerabilities out of fear that others will see through their weaknesses.
4The Sensationalist - the most practical and materialistic. They love the sensual and moved by the symbolism of items. Also the most introverted and with an aesthetic, particular sense.

At the extremes, they either develop a bipolar temperament — seeking extreme highs and extreme lows and being driven by their mood. In the unhealthy case, they are attracted to self-destructive, irresponsible behaviors
The Outsider - they see themselves most unlike others — a uniqueness that is both a blessing and a curse.

Eventually shame sets in as they realize they do not know how to be “normal”. They cover their insecurities, and they react strongly to statements about themselves. A fear of rejection may lead them to withdraw completely or to become extremely dependent and wasteful.
Infatuation - Vulnerable and impressionable but aggressive and dynamic. The most romantic and intense. They act on their fantasies, leading to obsessive or possessive behavior.

Envy is very apparent. They long to be desirable and this can lead to self-sabotaging behaviors in order to get revenge — to justify hurting them. Turbulent and emotionally unstable.
5Isolation and Hoarding - they gain independence and separation by reducing their needs and spending. They are true loners and are introverted

Extremely resentful of having expectations on them . Emotionally detached and dry. In the unhealthy case, they can become eccentric shut-ins. Prone to paranoia
The Specialist - they engage with others and find a social niche for themselves through their expertise. Interested in complex topics but not social banter.

In an unhealthy case, they become unable to relate to others except through the role of their expertise. In the extreme, they express extreme views — antisocial and misanthropic.
This is My Work - they like sharing secret information but they also experience tension between the pursuit and their tendency to withdraw. They can be both emotionally available and emotionally distant.

They look for the ideal mate who will not be turned off by their eccentricity. The fantasy can keep them grounded but also make them fetishistic
6Responsibility - they work hard to build up security through mutual responsibility — a commitment that they expect others will reciprocate.

They can use their anxieties to gain allies, but this can devolve to being extremely dependent and panicky. They end up self-sabotaging for fear of losing support. They may also exaggerate dangers or provoke non-existent fights
Generating Support - they handle anxiety by looking to others. They want to fit in and adhere to the system — especially if it has like-minded individuals

They can have difficulty working for their own success rather than looking at the group’s dynamics. Indecisive and eventually ambivalent. Can be passive aggressive, and pessimistic. In the extreme, they can become slavishly attached to extreme beliefs
Symbols of Power and Connection - they either develop a display of strength or a mask of sexuality to attract support. They seek a powerful mate to act as their support.

More defiant of authority, especially when anxious. More doubting of themselves and others. Erratic and prone to explosive reactions, especially when their insecurities are exposed. They may be prone to sabotaging others or themselves.
7Getting Mine - determined and energetic, driven to make sure their needs are met. They are materialistic and hedonistic. They avoid dependencies with others.

They can feel impatient when their needs are not quickly met. Demanding when frustrated. In the extreme, they can be thoughtless and relentless in the pursuit of their needs. Prone to excessive consumption and self-indulgence
Missing Out - they cultivate a group of “advisors” who share enthusiasms with them to provide stimulation .However, they can feel frustrated at how slow others are. They resent social restriction — especially authority.

They tend to be scatter-brained and not fully commit. Friendly but can easily feel trap. In the extreme, they compulsively plan but never commit. Both unsettled and unsettling since they are irresponsible and destructive.
The Neophile - constantly looking for something new. They seek an idealized reality. Magnetized by interesting things and willing to charm those that appeal to their excitement. Their minds move quickly but are also prone to restlessness

Can become fickle and avoid commitments — favoring the chase of the romance rather than cultivating a long-term relationship. In an unhealthy case, they can become deviant and self-destructive—especially as the highs lose their potency over time.
8The Survivor - most no-nonsense kind. Focuses on practical matters. They enjoy ruling their domestic life. Materialistic and seeks symbol of power. Can be prone to workaholism.

Avaricious in the sense of being protective of their possessions. This can devolve to being thieves and bullies intent on protecting their interests
Gusto and Camaraderie - they express their intensity through powerful bonds. Greatly values honesty and trust. They tend to surround themselves with predictable friends to avoid rejection. For those in their social circle, they will do anything for them. They also enjoy asserting themselves through debates.

In an unhealthy level, this can lead to rejecting friends over disagreements, and bearing grudges for long. It is hard to regain their trust. Ironically, they can also become rogues and con-artists — offering little support for others despite their honeyed words.

In the extreme case, they can become antisocial, reckless, and self-destructive.
Taking Charge - quietly intense and charismatic. Passionate about whom they care about. Deeply loving and devoted but tries to assert themselves in the relationship. Can be competitive for the thrill of it.

They can be too controlling - demanding loyalty and attention. It is difficult to maintain a relationship with both parties equal. In the extreme, they can completely control their partner and be extremely jealous. Prone to being abusive and vindicative.
9The Comfort Seeker - pleasant and easygoing, content with simple pleasures. Not ambitious despite their talents. They do not like routines . They can be attached to minor rewards

Apathy makes it difficult for them to actually go out to obtain what they want. Instead, they may use substitutes instead. This can lead to them shutting down, being perpetually tired, and addicted
One Happy Family - interested in bringing people together and making peace. They like to be involved but resist having expectations being placed on them. In the case there are expectations on them, they want to make these explicitly.

Insecure about their worth and so have difficulty saying no. They end up resisting passive-aggressively. They can become disenchanted from trying to please others. They have trouble setting goals and following through. In the extreme, this leads to resignation, depression, and isolation
Merging - they want to take the energetic qualities of the other types, gravitating to aggressive types. Sassier and angry when they feel their connections with others is threatened. They seek a complete partnership with no distinction between the two halves. They can idealize but also be critical and demanding.

They fail to develop any sense of independence. They cling to the other and make them a part of their identity. They feel lost when the fantasy of merging is never met, leading to a simmering anger. They end up either in highly dependent relationships or floundering on their own or becoming a function of past relationships.

1The Educator - the person to instill wisdom to the ignorant, although this can spiral to being irritable and expecting others to live up to their high standards.
2The Confidante - the best friend others seek advice to and share special secrets with, however this can spiral to feeling the need to get closer to someone (i.e., via flattery) or to tout their intimacy with their friends.
3The Best - the person who must always be outstanding. Seeing themselves as the Best compensates for their insecurities. They find self-esteem by meeting the expectations of others, but these expectations may change.
4The Special One - the one who isn’t like other people, potentially contrarian and eccentric. They end up depriving themselves of many sources of satisfaction. They end up creating a negative identity as a result of rejecting the positive qualities they share with others.
5The Expert - they carve a niche for themselves to hide their insecurities. They want to surpass everyone in that niche. At the same time, they are aware of the areas they haven’t mastered especially those that relate to the practical and social aspects of “real life”.
6The Stalwart - they invest time into their commitments, hoping the sacrifice is paid off with increased support and security from the higher ups. This leads to a sense of insecurity when they wonder if they would still be supported if they stopped.
7The Energizer - the person who must excite everyone. They become the center of attention and also mischief which begins to evolve to something tiresome for themselves and especially for others. They cannot relate to others and interpret them not keeping up as rejecting them.
8The Rock - the strong foundation for everyone else. They show their strength but also hide their weakness. They lash out against threats.
9Nobody Special - they modest person who stays in the background to not inconvenience others. They minimize their hopes and (get others to) focus on others rather than themselves, leading to depression and loneliness.
